Wooden Ships Comments Ian Oughtred Sooty Tern rowing skiff

Ian Oughtred Sooty Tern rowing skiff built from an Alec Jordan kit. The Sooty Tern is a slightly stretched version of the Arctic Tern design, a sailing beach boat with a large following. This particular boat was built for rowing and has no rig, the owner lives near the Thames and wanted a light weight but capable rowing skiff, able to carry 3 rowers as well as kit and crew.

Length Overall                   19’7″

Beam                                5’6″

Construction

Planked in 9mm Robins marine plywood, all epoxy glued to create a stiff and light weight hull. Solid wooden gunnel and rubbing strake gives stiffness to the top of the hull. Modern ‘gate’ type rowlocks fitted to the gunnel.

Solid wooden thwarts with heavy supporting knees. Centreboard case fitted, currently blocked off; with the slot in the keel should a future owner wish to fit a sailing rig to the boat.  Rudder has also been made but not fitted.

3 pairs of oars and gate rowlocks
