Wooden ships comments on this Harbour launch

Harbour launch built for Dartmouth Harbour Authority in 1947 and owned by the Authority until 2009 when she was purchased by the present owners.

The launch is well known in Dartmouth as Cmdr Haddock’s launch. As Assistant Harbour Master for many years, Cmdr Haddock  in his wonderful classic varnished mahogany launch was known to many visiting yachts as he motored around collecting Harbour Dues.

A thorough refit in present ownership included stripping back to bare hull, new shaft log, engine service, new sole boards and a complete paint and varnish job.

As a retired boat-yard owner he was fully conversant with the uses of epoxy resin so sheathed the under water surface of the hull with resin and one layer of light-weight glass cloth. This procedure protects the wood from marine borers and ensures total water-tight integrity as well as adding some strength to the hull.

This is an exceptional and unusual launch listed as one of our classic boats for sale. she is a very convenient size and it is rare to find a carvel planked launch rather than the usual clinker planking. She is built tight seamed which requires considerable skills, she feels solid, she is very stable and above all with her sleek lines she moves smoothly and effortlessly through the water without creating the wake as so many launches do.

Construction

Carvel laid, tight seamed mahogany planking all copper rivet fastened to steam bent oak timbers.  Varnished topsides with oiled interior and epoxy sheathed under water surface.
