Wooden Ships Comments on this Sparkman & Stephens Sloop
Designed in 1975 by Olin Stephens as a yacht for mass production in the USA (Tartan 37). A plan for a British variant, the Condor 37, was developed for the European market and approximately 12 of these are known to exist. Construction of the tooling was completed in Falmouth in 1979. The timber plug to make the hull mould (which was always intended to be a finished yacht hull) was taken by H E Wright who fitted out and completed her as a cruiser racer. She has been cruised and raced successfully by the present owner for the last 12 years and has proven her speed and manageability on the classic race circuit. In previous ownership she was used as a sail training vessel.
Very well maintained and dry stored every winter, she is a stunning looking yacht in superb condition. She has the benefit of a more modern design which offers a lot of interior volume for the length, with the relatively high freeboard and wide beam adding to this interior space.
