The original Peter Duck was designed by Laurent Giles for the author Arthur Ransome before the war. The design was revived in 1961 in a slightly modified form and between 1961 and 1970 38 boats were built by Porter and Haylet proving the popularity of this fine little cruising yacht.

This one was built in 1962.

The design is typical Laurent Giles and remarkably similar to the famous Vertue but fuller and bigger.

Long keel, transom stern, good freeboard and beam make her a stable, dry yacht with excellent sea-keeping capability.

Planked in iroko on heavy sawn oak frames with steamed intermediate timbers, all copper fastened. Oak floors with a few galvanised steel strap floors.

Long external 39cwt iron ballast keel. New keel bolts in 1995.

Painted iroko coach-roof raised to a dog-house aft. The coach-roof reaches forward of the mast with the fore hatch on the fwd end in front of the mast.

Large window each side in the dog-house, 4 oblong lights each side in the coamings.

Varnished iroko fore hatch and cabin entrance hatch in the dog-house. Grab rails on the coach-roof and the dog-house.

Deep toe rail all round with varnished iroko capping.

Deep self-draining cock-pit with scrubbed teak seat/lockers each side. High step to the stbd off-set cabin entrance in the varnished cabin bulkhead, twin louvered doors and sliding hatch to the cabin entrance. Tiller steering to transom hung rudder.

 

Fractional bermudian ketch rig on varnished masts. The main mast is stepped in a galvanised tabernacle on the coach-roof. Single spreaders with jumper struts above.

The mizzen mast is stepped in a shoe in the cock-pit sole. Single spreaders.

Galvanised rigging wire, new 2006 to internal galvanised chain plates.. Main mast with twin lowers and intermediates, diamonds round the jumpers above. Twin standing back-stays.

Sailspar roller genoa on the stemhead fore-stay to the jumpers.

Mizzen mast with single cap shrouds round the spreaders and back-stays on tackles to the quarters.

 

Sails by Hood. Mainsail, jib on roller furing, mizzen and genoa set 433sq + mizzen staysail.

Winches

Pair of Lewmar self tailing sheet winches on the cock-pit coamings.

 

Engine.

 Volvo Penta MD2040  installed 2003 with approx 600hrs. Fresh water cooled with heat exchanger. Single lever controls.

Centre-line engine installation to centre-line 3-blade prop fitted with a rope cutter.

5knts at 1600rpm

 

Tanks

22 gall stainless steel fuel tank in the stbd cock-pit locker tank.

25 gall water tank port cock-pit locker.

 

2 x 12v batteries.  Engine alternator. 2 solar panels connected to domestic battery.

 

 

Accommodation:       4 berths.

V-berths in the fore cabin, good head-room under fore hatch in the coach-roof above.

Bulkhead doors to port heads compartment with Simpson Lawrence 396 Standard sea toilet. Stainless steel hand basin slides out above the toilet and stows back under the side deck. Two hanging lockers opposite to stbd. with Waeco 18 litre fridge/freezer below.

Twin mahogany doors in the white painted bulkhead open to the saloon cabin with port and stbd settee berths.

Lockers and shelves behind, stowage under.

Single drop leaf varnished mahogany table with 3-compartment cutlery recess in the surface.

Part bulkheads aft to stbd, outboard facing chart desk.

Galley to port with gimballed Spinflo Nelson 1500 2-burner and oven gas cooker, new in 2006.

Double stainless steel sinks drain overboard with foot pumps for both fresh water and sea water taps.

Crockery stowage in a rack above the cooker.

White painted bulkheads and deck-head, varnished mahogany coamings and joinery.

Well-cambered coach-roof unencumbered by deck beams gives 6’ head-room in the saloon cabin.

Gas bottle in gas-tight locker in the lazarette.
