This Laurent Giles Salar 40 was the first of the class built in 1966 and was displayed at that years London Boat Show where she won the Boat of the Show prize.

The yacht has many features typical of Laurent Giles and is effectively a small version of his much larger Dorus Mhor class.  She has a conventional long keel, a wonderful flare to the bow with that slight chine worked in to the sheer strake, a positive sheer and a long over-hanging  transom stern, the cut-off counter also found in some of his rule-cheater race yacht designs. Add a generous beam which gives so much space on deck and volume in the cabin and we have a design which has endured till very recent times.

The sheltered midships helm position, all on main deck level with no step down into a cock-pit is a huge advantage with the open-backed dog-house protected by the aft cabin coach-roof.

The sloop rig carries a very effective sail area and although no racing yacht she is far from being a motor sailer.

The accommodation gives her two en suite sleeping cabins with a good-sized midships saloon. The galley is sited down the stbd side with a dinette arrangement opposite which can be converted to a double berth.

This is the perfect arrangement for a family cruising yacht or for a couple with occasional guests.

She is not so big that she is expensive to keep or a handful to sail but she does give the comfort in harbour and at sea which is usually only found in a larger yacht.  2016 survey.

Construction

Planked in mahogany all copper fastened to steam bent oak timbers.

Mix of galvanise steel and grown oak floors across the centreline.

Cast iron ballast keel with iron keel bolts replaced in previous ownership.

Sheathed marine plywood deck

 

 

 

Rig

Mast head bermudan sloop rig on a varnished deck stepped mast.

Varnished roller reefing boom with stack pack system.

Stainless steel standing rigging all replaced in 2009.

Full set of sails including downwind and storm sails.

Self tailing Lewmar winches

 

 

Machinery

Perkins Sabre M92b 92hp 4cyl marine diesel installed new in 2011.

PRM gearbox with an Aquadrive and stainless shaft to a centre line 3 blade bronze propeller.

120 gallons of fuel in two tanks.  tanks are steel coated in GRP for corrosion resistance.

60 gallons of water in twin tanks.

Twin start batteries and 3 domestic batteries with 240v shore power system.

 

 

Accommodation

Open backed wheelhouse with fore and aft coach roof.

Centre line helm with companionway to saloon on starboard side.

Steps down to the main saloon with a galley to starboard and dinette seating to port which folds down into a double berth.

Galley with two burner gas stove with oven and grill.  Single stainless sink with hot and cold pressurised water.  Microwave and fridge.  Ample storage right through the galley.

Starboard passage forward into the forecabin with twin V berths.  Chain locker beneath berths and a storage locker right in the bows.

Forward heads compartment with a Simpson Lawrence sea toilet.

Aft cabin accessed via a companion hatch at the aft end of the wheel house.  Twin double berths recently made wider with new cushions and upholstery.

Aft heads compartment with a sea toilet and shower.
