Classic bermudan sloop designed by P.C. Crossley and built by Ponsharden Shipyard, Falmouth in 1934 for an Irish cricketer who lived close to the yard.

Percy Crossley worked with the great Linton Hope, was a notable member of the Royal Windermere Yacht Club for 60 years and the resident designer of the Windermere 17s, a fleet which is still racing on the lake.

Rogue is a typical yacht of the period design with all the features we nowadays understand as a true classic yacht – elegant counter stern, full keel with cut-away fore foot, yacht-laid deck and lots of varnished teak.

Construction.

The hull construction is exceptionally robust for the size of the yacht.

Planked in pitch-pine all copper and bronze fastened to heavy sawn oak frames with 2 steamed intermediates on an oak back-bone.

Lead ballast keel. Bronze keel bolts. The heads of the bolts and the nuts look quite recent.

Original iron strap floors all removed and patterns made for new stainless steel plate floors to be side bolted to the frames thus avoiding bolts through the hull planking with consequent risk of corrosion.ron.

Unusually heavy 4” x 4” bilge stringer.  Deep beam shelf with long clamp in way of the mast.

Forged iron hanging knees and oak lodging knees in way of mast.

Underwater hull recaulked in 2007.

The deck is in surprisingly good condition and appears to be a fine grained, quarter sawn pine, possibly Kauri pine, yacht-laid,  secret nailed to heavy deck beams. Traditionally caulked. The underside of the deck is varnished.

Teak coverboards finished varnished and teak toe rail with varnished capping.

Varnished teak king plank.

Long, narrow coach-roof up to the mast. Varnished teak coamings with opening bronze port-holes. Grab rails each side.

Pine planked roof with marked camber, canvas-covered.

Sliding teak entrance hatch and wash-boards.

Cock-pit with varnished teak coamings nicely turned in forward to meet the coach-roof coamings. Wide bridge deck.

In the course of the present refit the cock-pit joinery has been removed for full access to the hull structure.

A new sole has been fitted on new bearers, new lazarette bulkhead.

Tiller steering with bronze fitting to the rudder stock which emerges through the aft deck in a teak swelling on the king-plank.

Bronze fairleads on the toe rails, bronze mush-room vent and mini bollard on the aft deck to take mooring lines.

Modern polished stainless-steel stemhead fitting with twin chain rollers takes forestay attachment.

New and exceptionally nicely made laid teak fore hatch lid.

Internal iron chain plates, side-bolted to the frames.

Sold by Wooden Ships to the present owner some years ago and chosen by him because of her possible gaff antecedents and with the intention of refitting the hull and fitting a new gaff cutter rig.  This hull is eminently suitable for this project and would make a fine gaff cutter, no doubt with a good turn of speed.

Following discovery of a long sought after yacht which has now taken priority, the refit of Rogue has been put on hold and meantime she is available to be bought.

Bukh 2-cyl 24hp diesel engine with very low hours ready to be installed.

Rig.

Until recently the yacht was fitted with a fractional bermudan sloop rig. We have good reason to believe that the original rig was a bermudian cutter but she may even have been gaff rigged. It was the owner’s intention to give her a new gaff cutter rig which would suit her very well indeed given her exquisite classic lines.

The gaff rig has been drawn up and checked for balance by a local marine architect. It is included in the sale.

Alloy mast  is available together with fittings, boom, sails and some rigging.

Accommodation.

The original joinery has long since disappeared following a refit by the previous owner over 20 years ago.

In present ownership the joinery has been removed to give full access to the hull structure.

There is potential for a forward cabin with V berths, a separate heads compartment, the usual saloon settee berths and even a quarter berth both sides.

With the cabin sole at the original level there is over 6’ head-room mid-ships and more at the companionway entrance.

History.

In present ownership since the autumn of 2009, the yacht came to Dartmouth by sea from Portsmouth, was lifted ashore  has been stored under cover for refit since then.

The whole interior surface has been stripped to bare wood and repainted.

The whole exterior, above and below wl has been stripped to bare wood, painted and ready for finishing coats.

Some refastrenings done.

All teak bright-work on deck stripped and varnished including the cover-boards.

This is an excellent project, clean, complete, most of the difficult and usually avoided things tackled and well on her way back up.
