Wooden ships comments on this Vega 38

Cheap boats are cheap for a reason, and this is no exception.  We have inspected this fine yacht and found some issues with soft timber in the beam shelf and coachroof carlings, especially on the starboard side.  As anyone with boat building knowledge will understand, this is not an easy job to remedy, and further investigation will be required to discover if the deck will need to be lifted in order to effect a repair, or if it can be done internally.  This boat is going to need a significant amount of time or money put into her, but for the right person with the right skills she will be a very good deal.

Vega 38

The Vega 38 range of yachts were built in Poland and imported to UK by Tubornet Ltd of London SW20 from 1965. At the time the cost was under £7000 including a Mercedes engine which was cheaper than most comparable yachts and they found a good market here.

The Vega 38 was designed by R. Langer and K. Milkalski and these yachts were built by Szczerin Yacht Yard, Poland.  This one launched in 1968.

The Vega 38 has classic lines with a full keel, cut-away fore-foot, rudder hung on a slightly raked stern post, an elongated spoon bow and a short elegant counter stern.

A coach-roof extends from forward of the mast to a raised dog-house aft. The fore hatch is on the fore end of the coach-roof.

Galvanised strap floors on all heavier laminated frames.

The underwater surface is Cascover sheathed to the water-line. Cascover sheathing is a woven nylon cloth glued to the bare wood surface with a resorcinol glue affording total worm protection, impact resistance and adding greatly to the strength of the hull.
