Wooden ships comments on this Van De Stadt 34
Standard Van de Stadt 34 design built by the owner and launched in 1992. These boats were built in several materials including steel, GRP and wood. Some were built with chines and others, such as this one, with a round bilge. They were known to be fast and seaworthy boats with a large interior volume thanks to their generous beam.
Although not built by a professional yard, the builder was a skilled man and was very meticulous in the construction of this boat. The original build quality is evident from the current condition, now 20 years on from her launch. A recent survey was very complimentary of the boat and found no significant problems.
Modern design with a straight raked stem, fin keel, spade rudder and a reverse counter.
Cold moulded epoxy hull construction. Built of 3 layers of Bruynzeel marine plywood with the outer skin above the waterline in planked mahogany. Hull finished in a single layer of epoxy cloth below the waterline, and varnished topsides.
Longitudinal stringers with marine plywood bulkheads.
External 4410lbs lead ballast keel with stainless steel keel bolts and timber floors.
Yacht laid teak deck over a marine plywood sub deck. Scrubbed teak toe rail and rubbing strake.

Sizeable foredeck with twin roller stainless steel stem head fitting. S/S pulpit with s/s stanchions and guard wires. Lewmar forehatch on the forward sloping face of the coachroof.
Wide side decks with aluminium genoa sheet tracks and midships cleats. Coachroof deck with teak handrails and Lewmar hatch.
Roomy self draining cockpit with tiller steering. Bridge deck to companionway. 2 lazarette lockers for fender stowage, and one capacious locker on starboard side. Spray hood. Halyards and reefing lines brought back to cockpit.
Fractional Bermudan sloop rig on a deck stepped alloy Kemp mast, new in 1992. Fully battened mainsail and roller furling genoa.
Aluminium Kemp slab reefing boom and alloy spinnaker pole.
Stainless steel standing rigging replaced in 2007.
Single 10mm cap shroud, single 10mm lowers, 7mm inner forestay and single7mm standing backstay. Also dyneema running backstays – r–rely used. Furlex roller furling gear on the forestay.
All rigging with Norseman terminals to stainless rigging screws also replaced 2007, and internal stainless steel chainplates,
This is a modern design of rig that has been updated and renewed when necessary. The rigging was all replaced in 2007.

Volvo MS10A single lever control gearbox with stainless steel shaft to 3 blade 16” Max Prop propeller. Gives 6 knots cruising with 8 knots max.
Approx 25 gallon diesel tank constructed of epoxy coated marine plywood, located under the galley.
2 12v batteries, one of them dedicated to engine starting and located adjacent to the companionway. 180ah domestic battery under saloon table. Charging from engine alternator and 2 32watt solar panels.
Also has a fitted mains battery charger.
Accommodation 6 berths in 2 cabins.
The interior of this yacht is more akin to that of a modern boat with a large saloon, forward cabin and a quarter cabin which is more like a large double quarter berth, and is comfortable to live in.
Steps down through the companionway over the engine hatch. Quarter berth/cabin to port. Galley on port side with Plastimo Pacific gimballed gas cooker and double stainless steel sink draining overboard. Top entry chest ice box in galley work surface. Ample storage behind sliding locker doors under deckhead and lockers under. Hot and cold pressurised water with hot water coming from calorifier tank.
Chart desk to starboard facing outboard. Lifting desk with chart storage space under. Instrument panel, electronics and light board above the desk with 2 vertical rows of narrow drawers below. Locker above.
Heads compartment to starboard aft of chart area. Lavac sea toilet with optional waste tank. Hot and cold running water to wash basin with shower facility.
Spacious saloon with centre line table and L-shaped settee port and bench settee to starboard. Top entry lockers in the table. Water tank beneath each settee, epoxy coated marine plywood, total at least 40 gallons.
Many hand holds throughout the saloon as any good sea boat should have with 6’+ headroom throughout. Lockers above settees with sliding fronts, and stowage space behind settee backs. Also stowage space under for’d end of bunks.
Bulkhead with door offset to starboard into forward cabin with V-berths, missing cushions. Forepeak currently used for sail stowage but could easily be used as it was designed by making cushions for the berths. 2 hanging lockers.
