Wooden Ships Comments on this Starling Burgess Bermudan cutter

Designed by Starling Burgess in the USA and built by Julius Peterson of New York in 1934.

The design was essentially based on the Itchen Ferry working boats with several developments that eventually led to Binker being built.  The first owner and designer wanted a boat that could be easily sailed by himself and his teenage son with good windward performance yet easily handled.  She proved to be fast, comfortable and sea kindly as well as having very attractive lines.  Uffa Fox wrote a detailed account of the boat and was full of praise for her.

Bought by the present professional shipwright owners in 2008 in a very bad state with the intention of completing a total rebuild.  The boat was launched in 2015 and was written about extensively in Classic Boat in July 2016.  Since her launch she has been sailed from Scotland to Devon and up to the Orkneys via the Caledonian Canal and proved herself to be a great sea boat with looks to attract attention everywhere she goes.

The rebuild involved replacement of much of the planking and structural timbers, a new deck, new interior, new rig and all new machinery and systems.  The work has been done to a very high professional standard and she is now completely finished and ready to be cruised and raced by a new owner.  The present owners are relocating and reluctantly need to sell so someone will now benefit from the vast amount of hard work that has been put into her.

A true classic yacht with plenty of pedigree in first class condition. 2015 detailed survey, 2019 survey update available.  June 2020 lifted ashore for topsides and antifoul paint, now afloat and in commission.
