Wooden ships comments on this Murray Peterson Schooner

Murray Peterson Schooner on the lines of the traditional American trading schooners.  Built in 1980 by J.D. Treher.

Typical American lines with a clipper bow and an exaggerated sheer line leading aft to a full counter.  Raked keel with a full bilge amidships and a sweet run on the planking going aft.

 

Planked in 1” cedar fastened with stainless steel screws to double laminate steam bent oak timbers, 2” x 2.5” at 10” centres.

Stainless fastenings renewed in 2008.

Murray Peterson Schooner

Hardwood backbone with solid teak floors. External iron ballast keel fastened with mild steel keel bolts.

 

Yacht laid teak deck, joggled to a king plank and screw fastened over a marine ply sub deck with white painted coverboards and a low bulwark all round.  Large beam shelf with heavy laminated hanging knees to support the hull deck join.

 

Marine plywood coachroof coamings finished in white paint.  Coachroof deck in marine plywood, the aft one is fibre glass sheathed and finished in deck paint, replaced 2012.  The forward coachroof is canvas covered and painted.

Spacious decks with Bowsprit mounted on the centre line.  Twin gypsy anchor windlass with bronze bow rollers.

Forward coachroof just aft of the foremast with sliding companionway hatch into forward accommodation with wide side decks either side.

Step in the deck amidships just forward of the mainmast to allow more headroom in the aft accommodation.

Main coachroof aft of the mainmast with sliding companionway offset to port and opening hatch on the centre line.

Wide spacious self draining cockpit with seating at deck level and a canvas sprayhood over the coachroof to give shelter to the cockpit.  Bridge deck to hinged varnished teak doors in the companionway.  Centrally mounted bronze compass binnacle on pedestal.

Varnished teak steering box at the aft end of the cockpit with varnished spoked wheel.  Wheel detachable to create more space in the cockpit while moored.

Small aft deck with taff rail around.  Stainless steel davits over the stern to carry the dinghy and large solar panels.

 

Rig.  Gaff schooner.

Gaff schooner rig on keel stepped solid spruce varnished masts.  Varnished spruce booms and gaff yards.  Painted bowsprit with varnished jib boom and varnished wooden dolphin striker.

Coarse yard on the foremast to set a large 50sqm coarse sail for downwind sailing.  Boomed staysail.

Stainless steel standing rigging with dead eye terminations to bronze rigging screws and external bronze chainplates.  Twin lower shrouds on both masts with topmast cap shroud on the main mast.

Running backstays on the main mast in sceptre with stainless steel levers.  New in 2008.

Main forestay to bowsprit end with outer jib forestay to end of the jib boom.

1 horizontally mounted Lewmar at the base of each mast (1 spare in the stores)

Pair of large self tailing bronze Barients in the cockpit for jib sheeting.

Pair of bronze non-ST cockpit sheet winches.

1 S/S non-ST on aft deck for dinghy davits.

 

Machinery.

Detroit 3-53 100hp 3 cyl marine diesel from 1974.  Installed from build. Rev counter, oil pressure and hour metre.  Stainless drip tray.

Paragon gearbox with single lever controls to centre line stainless steel shaft and bronze 3 blade propeller gives 6.5 knots cruising, 7.5 knots max speed.

2 stainless steel fuel tanks with total capacity of 550lt located outboard amidships.  Twin parallel Racor fuel filters.

12 volt electrical system with 110/220V available.

6 x Mastervolt domestic gel batteries with total of 750ah, installed 2012.  Dedicated specialist charging system.

Single dedicated lead acid engine start battery.  Xantrex charger.

2 x 140 watt Kyocera solar panels with Blue Sky controller mounted on dinghy davits. New 2012

2 x Victron inverters to supply 110/220V onboard with the need for shore power or generator. New 2008.

Honda EU2000i 2kw petrol generator.  New 2012.

Although not new the engine has been well maintained and regularly serviced, and the engine and gearbox have both been partly rebuilt.  Cosmetic overhaul in 2012.

 

Accommodation.  7 berths.

Nice accommodation with mostly teak joinery and 6’ headroom throughout.  There is a feeling of comfort and security down below in this yacht with a high standard of finish to the joinery.

Steps down through the companionway into the main saloon.  U-shaped galley to starboard with a very nice layout.  Centrally placed 4 burner Force 10 gimballed gas oven installed 2011.  Scrubbed teak double sink with cold pressurised water drains overboard.  Deep built in chest fridge and freezer, one either side of the stove with top access to both.  Large amounts of storage space above and below the work surface.

Chart table to port with good sized quarter berth aft of this.

Saloon with centre line drop leaf gimballed table and port and starboard settees. Davey Hotpot solid fuel stove on forward starboard bulkhead.

Passageway going forward on port side with hanging lockers to port and engine room access to starboard.

Forward to the heads with a Raritan sea toilet which can either pump overboard or into the waste tank with electric waste pump.  Heads has been prepared for a shower installation, not yet fitted.

Forecabin with 3 single berths, all with new mattresses, and canvas storage bags on the hull side.

Water from a 280lt stainless steel tank located amidships with electric pressure pump

The present owners are the fourth since she was built and have spent two years cruising on the Pacific coast of Central America and the Caribbean.  This is a well found yacht with a proven design, other examples of which have completed numerous ocean passages and proved the boats to be fast comfortable passage makers.  This one also benefits from a comprehensive inventory and a large varied sail wardrobe that will keep her sailing in all weather conditions.
