Wooden Ships Comments on this Laurent Giles Bermudan sloop
Designed by Laurent Giles and Partners and built by Mashfords of Cremyll, Plymouth 1965 to design No 419 drawn in 1930.
Jack Laurent Giles is one of the best know names in UK yacht design and was responsible for some of the most famous yachts ever built and sailed in UK.
The 25’ Vertue is one of his greatest designs, possibly the most successful small yacht design ever.
This yacht is a slightly larger sister to the Vertue and can justly claim many of the smaller sister’s virtues and she closely resembles the Hiscock’s slightly larger Wanderer 111.
The yacht was built for Cmdr Angus of Plymouth and remained in his ownership until sold by Wooden Ships to the Rev Mike Palmer and his wife in 1997. The yacht had never been fitted out below deck and by 1997 the Commander’s health was suffering and the yacht had not been sailed for a few seasons.
In the ownership of Mike and Nettie Palmer she had a major refit in 1997 when the ballast keel was dropped and rebedded with new bolts, the hood ends of the planks were refastened, the dead-woods were refastened, the few strap floors were regalvanised, the garboards were replaced and the original canvas deck covering replaced with epoxy/glass.
A new aluminium mast and rig was fitted.
She was sold to an Englishman who lived and worked in France. Subsequently she was sold and returned to the UK.
The design is for a conventional long keeled yacht with a short spoon bow and a slightly raked transom stern with very attractive tumble-home.
Length on deck 28’9”
Planked in Larch on sawn oak frames with 2 steamed Canadian Rock elm intermediates. Fastened with copper rivets to the steamed timbers and bronze screws in the sawn frames.
Oak back bone with external lead ballast keel fastened with hot dipped galvanise keel bolts, all replaced in 1997.
Heavy grown oak floors with some galvanised straps. All galvanised floors removed and re-coated then replaced with new bolts in 1997.
T&G straight laid pine deck sheathed in epoxy glass cloth and painted with non slip deck paint.
Coverboards and king plank in varnished Afromosia. High varnished toe rail all round
Self draining cockpit with a varnished bridge deck. Varnished lifting thwarts either side with deep lockers under.
Transom hung rudder recently rebuilt.
Fractional bermudan sloop rig on a keel stepped 1997 Selden alloy spar with a varnished spruce slab reefing boom.
Stainless steel standing rigging all replaced in 2005.
Rotostay roller furling headsail, running backstays in Highfield levers and a standing backstay to a bumpkin.
Mainsail, jib, storm jib, staysail and spinnaker
Bronze cockpit sheet winches.
Yanmar 2GM20 twin cylinder 20hp diesel fitted new in 1998.
Single lever controls to a starboard offset fixed 3 blade bronze propeller. 5/6 knots at 1.5 litres/hour.
25 litre stainless fuel tank
120 litres of water in 3 separate tanks.
2 x 12 volt batteries for engine starting and domestics, both new in 2017.
Charging via the 55 amp alternator with a smart regulator, solar panel or through shore power. Installed shore power system. Wiring replaced in 2006/2007.
4 berths including 2 saloon settee berths and twin V-berths forward.
Steps down over the engine box with galley to starboard and chart desk to port.
Galley has a 2 burner Origo meths stove set in a well and a single stainless sink with manually pumped fresh water
Lifting chart desk faces outboard with electronics and nav equipment under the deck head.
Half height bulkheads divide off the main saloon. Settee berth either side with lockers under the side decks
Centreline passage way going forward with the heads compartment to starboard and hanging locker to port.
Heads is a Baby Blake which discharges directly overboard. Fold down hand basin drains into the heads bowl.
Forward cabin with twin V-berths and a large amount of storage volume under.
