This North Sea 24 was designed by Kim Holman and built by his brother Jack at his Upham’s Boatyard, Brixham, Devon in 1965.

A very successful design with excellent sea-keeping ability, a good passage-maker with a good turn of speed.

The North Sea 24 was a well received design, competitive with the Viking from Holman’s great contemporary, Alan Buchanan and is sometimes described as a big sister to the better-known Twister.

Planked in 1” mahogany, carvel laid, caulked and payed.


Frames:
Canadian Rock Elm steamed timbers, heavier section in way of the mast.

Heavy beam shelf with clamp below in way of the mast.


Fastenings
: All copper nails and roves.


Deck:
    10mm marine ply, sheathed and painted. Laminated deck beams in way of the mast.

Stainless steel stemhead fitting with double chain rollers carries the fore stay.

Chromed mushroom vent behind the stem

Centre ally alloy cleat and teak bar cleats either side to take mooring warps.

Gas bottle locker on the aft deck.

Teak bar cleats either side.

Varnished teak toe rails.

Stainless steel pull-pit, push-pit and stanchions. The pull-pit incorporates crutches to take  twin spinnaker poles.


Coach-roof:
Varnished teak coamings with windows in chromed bezels.

Sheathed ply deck on varnished deck beams

Varnished grab rails each side.

Entrance hatch in varnished teak in a garage

Fore hatch in varnished teak.

Chromed vents on varnished teak Dorade boxes.


Ballast. 
2.5 tons iron ballast keel. 2 iron keel bolts drawn for inspection in 2003, found good and replaced.

Later X-ray examination.


Floors
    Oak floors with a few galvanised strap floors in the midships bilge.


Cock-pit
Self draining. Varnished teak cock-pit well.

Deep teak coamings. Bridge deck. Seat lockers each side with scrubbed teak lids.

Cubby-hole stowage  under the side decks.

Steering.
Transom-hung rudder. Low level tiller through an aperture in the transom makes for a comfortable helming position.  More stowage under the aft deck.


Rig        

Masthead bermudian sloop rig on oval section, alluminium mast stepped in a galvanised shoe on the coach-roof.

Single spreaders. Lazy inner fore stay.

Stainless steel rigging with Norseman terminals to internal stainless steel chain plates. Twin lowers, twin standing back-stays to the quarters. Fore stay with roller reefing gear.

Heavy section track on the forward face of the mast with twin spin pole cars.

 

Recent Selden alloy boom with Jiffy Reef system. Sheets to track on aft cock-pit coaming with tufnol blocks fitted with jammers.

Kicker on tackle, tufnol blocks with jammer.

Headsail sheets through cars on a toe rail track back to cock-pit sheet winches.

 

Winches

Pair of large, original Lewmar primary sheet winches with blue rubber self tail caps

Pair of modern small self-tail Barlow sheet winches.

Pair of Lewmar mast halyard winches with blue self tail rubber caps

Single self tail Barlow reefing winch under the goose neck.

Max speed 6knts.

Consumption, approx 1/3rd gph at cruising revs or 5knts

10 gall steel fuel tank under the cock-pit sole.

2007 service incl  with new thermostat, temp sensor, new head anodes.

 

Batteries 3 x 12v 110amp/hr  batteries, new 2008,  under the port side cock-pit locker.

12v circuits. 240v shore power connection.

5 berths

V-berths in the fore cabin. Lovely mahogany joinery with drawers under the bunks. Fore hatch above. Ship’s sides varnished with varnished mahogany slats

Chain chute to chain locker under between the V berths.

Bulkhead with sliding door across stbd side doorway to passageway through to the saloon.

Heads compartment to port. Lavac sea toilet. Plastic folding hand basin unit on the bulkhead drains into the wc. Cubby-hole stowage under the side deck.

Drinks locker above the fwd end of the stbd settee with leaded glass doors and auto red light inside.

Port side fwd bulkhead in white ply. Bengco charcoal cabin heater with flue to deck, book shelf, 12v bunk light and brass gimballed oil lamp.

Fixed varnished table on stainless steel tube mount, easily removed and stowed under the settee berth or fitted in the cock-pit. It spins easily to allow fore and aft passage either in the cabin or the cock-pit.

Half bulkheads, teak trimmed with grab handles.

 

Large chart desk in the after port corner with bunk trotter box partially under.

Galley
in the aft stbd corner with Plastimo gimballed 2-burner gas cooker in a recess with a crash bar across.

Deep stainless steel sink, waste pumped over-board.

Pressurised water supply, cold water faucet at the galley sink.

25 gallons m/s galvanised  steel tank midships.

Varnished engine box step between galley and chart desk with open tread ladder to cock-pit.

Ample stowage behind the ladder under the bridge deck.
