Wooden ships comments on this 37′ Bermudan sloop

37′ Bermudian Sloop built in France in 1964 by Herve of La Rochelle.

Most likely designed as a cruiser/racer type yacht for the ravenous French market, Her generous beam, full bilge and relatively short overhangs give a stiff boat with a decent interior volume that will be dry, fast and weatherly.

37′ Bermudan Sloop

Cold moulded strip plank construction in glued mahoganyMultiple layers of glue bonded timber, finished with a horizontally laid planking on the topsides.

6 closely spaced longitudinal oak stringers extending from bow to stern give an enormous amount of strength.  This is unusual for this type of construction as the glued strip plank is normally considered strong enough with just a couple of stringers.  It is clear this hull was built with strength and endurance in mind.

Oak floors and galvanised steel straps across the keel section tie the two sides of the hull together.

External lead ballast keel with stainless steel keel bolts through the timber backbone and the oak floors.

The hood ends, garboards and floors are all bronze fastened.

Yacht laid teak deck to a king plank over a marine plywood sub deck, the whole glued and screw fastened to deck beams and beamshelf.  Steel plate hanging knees to support the hull to deck join.

Low coachroof  leading aft to a slightly raised doghouse.  Varnished mahogany coachroof coamings with 3 aluminium framed windows each side, 2 large aluminium framed windows in the doghouse.  Marine plywood coachroof deck, epoxy sheathed and finished in white deck paint.

Stainless steel twin roller stem head fitting with incorporated forestay attachment.  Deep scrubbed teak toe rail which becomes shallower as it runs aft to accentuate the sheer line.

S/s pulpit with bicolour navigation lights attached to s/s guar wires and stanchions, all bolted through the deck on teak pads.  Single large mooring cleat on the foredeck with vertical axis 12v electric anchor windlass.

Lewmar forehatch in the coachroof with small lewmar hatches in the doghouse roof.  Teak handrails on the coachroof deck.

Wide clear side decks with the genoa sheet tracks mounted on the top of the toe rail.

Wide and spacious self-draining cockpit with the coamings stepped outboard from the coachroof to increase the cockpit size by encroaching on the aft side decks.  Marine plywood cockpit coamings painted white with teak capping rail.  Pair of sheet winches mounted on the coamings each side.  Laid teak cockpit seating with opening hatch on port side to access deep cockpit locker.  Bridge deck to companionway with a small overhang on the aft end of the coachroof deck.

Teak grating on the sole with wheel steering pedestal.  Steering is via s/s wire cables to a quadrant on the rudder stock.  Emergency tiller if required.

Large aft deck with teak hatch set on small coamings with watertight rubber seal to the cavernous lazarette locker.   Single aft mooring cleat with fairleads on the quarters.  Pushpit in s/s with lifebouy mounts.

Rig

Bermudan masthead sloop rig on deck stepped alloy mast.

Alloy slab reefing boom with s/s gooseneck fitting.

Stainless steel standing rigging approximately 10 years old.  Single cap shroud and single lowers to s/s rigging screws and internal s/s chainplates, mounted through the deck with s/s plates encapsulating a bead of sealer compound to stop water ingress.

Single standing s/s backstay to s/s rigging screw and external chainplate bolted on the transom.

Outer forestay with Rotostay roller furler.  Inner forestay in s/s to a fixing point at forward end of coachroof, supported on the inside by a s/s bar fixed to the keel.

Battened mainsail and roller furling genoa in good sound condition.

Winches

2 x Barlow self-tailing 2 speed Model 22 primary sheet winches in the cockpit.

2 x Barlow non self-tailing secondary sheet winches in the cockpit.

2 x Barlow 4 encapsulated wire halyard mast winches.  Non self-tailing small reefing winch on the mast with an identical winch on the boom.

Machinery

Isuzu 4L 4 cyl 35hp marine diesel installed new in 2008.  Low hours and recorded regular servicing, very smart and reliable power unit which is efficient and quiet.

Hydraulic gearbox with s/s shaft to 3 blade bronze propeller gives 5 knots cruising, 6.5 knots max speed.

Sizeable plastic fuel tank located in the port side cockpit locker.

Batteries

3 x 12v batteries.  One dedicated to engine starting, one to domestics and one to the anchor windlass.  All 3 can be paralleled if required.

Charging via engine alternator or through 240v charger and shore power connection.

Accommodation

Spacious interior due to the generous beam, finished in such a way so as to make the boat practical useable and comfortable.

Steps down from the bridge deck in front of the engine box.  Locker behind the steps above the engine.  Large removable panel for easy engine access.

Galley to port, laid out in a U shape with central gimballed Plastimo 2 burner stove and grill.  Double s/s sink on the forward side with drain pumped directly overboard.  Hand pumped fresh water from s/s tank under the cabin sole.  Lockers behind under the deckhead with sliding door fronts.  Ample storage space and worktop space in the galley.

Starboard quarter berth with chart desk forward of the bunk.  L-shaped chart desk with its dedicated seat, rather than using the head of the bunk as often happens.  Switches, gauges, VHF and plotter at the chart desk.

Half height bulkhead on port side to main saloon with settee berths port and starboard.  Varnished mahogany cabin sole boards.  Settee cushions finished in blue vinyl.  Lockers behind the port berth against the hull sides.  Varnished mahogany slats across the frames allow hull to breath and contrast against the white paint.

Passageway offset to starboard with heads to port and hanging locker to starboard.  Heads with manual Jabsco sea toilet and single s/s basin which drains into a sump with electric pump out.  Hand pumped fresh water.

Fore cabin with double berth.  Varnished mahogany slats on the hull sides and storage under the bunk.  Small doors at forward end to access large anchor locker.

This is a sound no nonsense cruising yacht which has had a lot of work done to her in recent years.  Every inch of the boat has been inspected and professionally refitted where required.  Her lines show a yacht that will put in fast passage times and can take a blow while looking after her crew.  She is not a Mediterranean regatta yacht and does not pretend to be so, but she is a safe and solid cruising boat with good interior volume, spacious cockpit and safe wide decks that will do exactly what is asked of her every time.
